If you receive a subpoena to appear in court to give testimony or provide documents as part of a grand jury investigation, you must appear as ordered. This can be a very scary situation, as the grand jury investigation room will consist of a prosecutor who can ask unlimited questions, without the protections of a formal proceeding such as a judge. It’s just you, the prosecutor, and the citizens serving as grand jurors. There is no defendant or defense attorney; the prosecutor is presenting evidence to determine who to charge with crimes, and with what crimes to charge those people. You will not be given any information about the investigation, about who the prosecutor is targeting to charge in the investigation. It is important that you protect yourself, before you wreck yourself. If you hire Urbelis Law, we will discuss with you all of the facts and circumstances that led to your being issued a grand jury subpoena. Based upon our discussions, you may have one of many privileges that can be asserted in order to avoid testifying and incriminating yourself or someone you love. This may require a ruling by the court if the prosecutor does not agree that you have a privilege to avoid testifying, in which case we will present our case to a judge.
